If you've been told you're "just stressed" but it doesn't feel like stress — it feels like your body won't switch off, or won't switch back on — you're likely describing nervous system dysregulation. It's the state your body settles into when it's spent too long under real or perceived threat, and it's a physiological condition, not a mood or a mindset.
I'm Campbell Will, a physiotherapist and breathwork educator. Before I taught anyone else how to regulate their nervous system, I spent over a decade in clinical settings watching people manage symptoms like pain, fatigue, and anxiety without anyone ever addressing the system underneath them. This article is the explanation I wish more of my patients had gotten years earlier.
What is nervous system dysregulation?
Nervous system dysregulation is a state in which your autonomic nervous system — the part of your body that controls heart rate, digestion, breathing, and your stress response — gets stuck in an inappropriate mode for the situation you're actually in. Most commonly, that means being stuck in sympathetic activation (fight-or-flight) long after the original threat has passed, even while sitting at your desk, lying in bed, or spending time with people you love.
It's not a diagnosis. It's a functional description of what's happening in your body: the system meant to switch between alert and calm has lost its flexibility, and defaults to alert, almost regardless of circumstance.
What does dysregulation actually feel like?
People describe it differently depending on which direction their system has drifted, but the common threads are:
- Feeling "wired but tired" — exhausted, yet unable to fully rest or sleep
- A racing mind even in quiet moments
- Shallow, rapid, or chest-dominant breathing you're not consciously aware of
- Digestive issues, tension headaches, or jaw and shoulder tightness with no clear cause
- Irritability or a short fuse over things that didn't used to bother you
- Feeling disconnected, numb, or "checked out" — this is dysregulation too, just the opposite pole
- Difficulty accessing calm even when your circumstances are objectively fine
That last point is often the most confusing part for people. Life can look completely under control — a good job, stable relationship, nothing "wrong" — and the body still won't stand down. That disconnect between circumstance and internal state is one of the clearest signs the nervous system, not the situation, is the actual problem.
What causes nervous system dysregulation?
Chronic stress is the most common driver, but it's rarely one big event. More often it's an accumulation:
- Sustained work or caregiving demands with no real recovery window between them
- Sleep disruption, which prevents the nervous system from completing its natural nightly reset
- Unprocessed emotional experiences — the body can hold onto a threat response long after the mind has moved on
- Dysfunctional breathing patterns — chest-based, rapid, or breath-holding patterns that keep signalling "threat" to the brain, even when nothing is actually wrong
- Sedentary, disconnected lifestyles — our biology evolved for movement, natural light, and social connection, and the absence of these is itself a low-grade stressor
The important thing to understand is that these causes are cumulative and physiological, not a character flaw or a failure to "manage stress better." Your nervous system responded appropriately to what it was given. The dysregulation is the adaptation, not the malfunction — but it's an adaptation that needs to be actively reversed, because it won't correct itself just because the original demands ease up.
Why willpower and insight don't fix it
Most stress-management approaches work at the level of thought: reframe the situation, change the habit, understand the pattern. That's valuable work, but it operates on the mind, and dysregulation lives in the body.
Your autonomic nervous system, by definition, is not under conscious control — you can't think your heart rate down or decide your way into parasympathetic recovery. This is why people who have done genuine inner work (therapy, mindfulness, self-reflection) can still feel stuck in their bodies: still wired, still not sleeping, still bracing. The insight was real. It just never reached the physiological layer where the dysregulation actually lives.
What does reach that layer?
Breath is the one part of the autonomic nervous system you can consciously influence, which makes it a direct, physiological lever rather than a coping strategy. Specific breathing patterns have a measurable effect on the vagus nerve, the primary driver of your parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) response. Change the breathing pattern, in the right way, and you send an unambiguous biological signal that it's safe to stand down — a signal that doesn't require insight, willpower, or the "right" circumstances to work.

A simple way to check your own baseline
Before reaching for any technique, it helps to notice where you actually are. Over the next hour, without changing anything, notice:
- Is your breathing happening mostly in your chest, or lower, in your belly?
- Are you holding your breath slightly between inhales, without meaning to?
- Do your jaw, shoulders, or stomach feel braced, even at rest?
None of these are wrong or bad — they're information. They're often the clearest, most honest signal of where your nervous system actually sits, underneath whatever your mind is telling you about how "fine" things are.
